Within the framework of this module, parents will gain basic knowledge about hearing and how the human ear works. They will gain knowledge of the different types of hearing loss. They will learn about the causes of hearing loss in babies. Parents will be able to recognize different types of hearing loss and to distinguish between terms such as profoundly deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing-impaired.

Parents will be able to explain the cause of child’s hearing loss to family members and to discuss the importance of early language development for all infants and toddlers.

Parents will be able to explain what a hearing test is and why it is important for their child. Parents will know how to interpret the results of their child’s hearing tests, understand audiograms and their key components, including frequency, decibel level, and hearing thresholds.

Parents will be able to develop the most important competence which is recognizing the relationship between hearing loss and speech and language development.

Parents will also be able to identify different types of technology available to support communication of and with deaf children. Parents will have a good understanding of the benefits and limitations of different technology options and know how to access resources and support.

Parents will become aware of the limitations of medical interventions such as cochlear implants and hearing aids, including their potential risks and benefits and will be able to take informed decisions for their child. Parents will be able to identify and access resources and support networks to help them navigate the limitations of medical and technological interventions. Parents will understand the impact of cultural and societal attitudes towards deafness and disability on medical and technological interventions.

The information and materials provided in this module will help guide families in choosing early intervention, testing, amplification, implantation, modes of communication, etc. Family members will understand the importance of keeping assistive technology devices well-maintained and updated and know how to operate them.
